Absolutely love this show. I think the "true story" part is a bit of a stretch lol. It's probably about as accurate as their depiction of polymyalgia rheumatica. As a physician myself: my biggest pet peeve in movies/film/television is when they depict medical and anatomical things so horrifically that they actually impact real life. A great example is all the times someone is depicted getting their abdomen cut open and their intestines spill out like a bunch of spaghetti...or like a long hose. While yea the intestines are a long tube...they aren't just floating in their connected to nothing lol. Just thinking about the fact that intestines are the site of nutrient absorption, so they would require both massive blood supply and blood drainage to actually move nutrients into the body (plus nerves to operate it all and supply for hormones). So the blood vasculature needs to be pretty intense and large...so every single section needs its own supply, and that comes in the form of mesenteric vasulature that exist inside of omentum/mesenteries that attach all the intestines to the back walls of the abdominal cavity. In reality it looks like a flower, the edges of all the pedals holding intestines anchoring them where they are. Plus without cutting those deep vessels, there wouldn't be much blood at all. Been in a LOT of abdominal surgeries. The big thing in this show was how they depicted polymyalgia rheumatica as some life long debilitating, incurable death sentence. It's not that. It sucks, and the pathology isn't super well understood, but it's an autoimmune vasculitis that largely effects proximal muscle joint regions (joints and hips) causing weakness, and many times pain, that isn't super related to activity or time of day. But, in every case I have seen or heard of: prednisone is curative or at least shuts it off for years. If you had to get an autoimmune disease: this is the one. Prednisone is a miracle for PMR. In fact, if you if you think something is PMR and you treat with prednisone but it doesn't respond: start thinking about other diagnoses lol. Also...I've never heard it called poly...that just means many or a lot. Rheumatica as a name can be confusing because it has come to be associated witj rheumatoid arthritis...which it isn't. Rheumatism/rheumatoid can mean all kinds of things but they do tend to be more lifelong outcomes of other pathologies, eg: rheumatic heart disease, or rheumatic fever as an outcome of poorly treated strep throat. But when poor disease depictions are done like this: there is always a flood of people who show up saying they have it, and they think it's what was depicted in media. Elhers Danlos is having a moment at present thanks to Television. And they just don't. You wouldn't be likely make it to adulthood with Elhers Danlos witjout knowing you have it. So that's all. The show is annoying. The characters in the show do the typical dumb things that you shake your head to. Throughout the episodes, you'll say aloud, "Don't do it", "why would you do that?", or "that was predictable" It's poor decisions after another to drag on the show for dramatics. It's not funny at all. The typical characters that mess up all the time, sabotages everything, which drags the show on. There's really no effort in this show.
